Ecclesiastes Part I

     Here we are at the Book of Ecclesiastes. This is a depressing book of the Bible if there ever was one, right? I mean, Psalms was pretty bad and Proverbs wasn't exactly a piece of pie but Ecclesiastes is seriously depressing. As you read through this book of the Bible you really must wonder about the state of mind, the depth of depression of the individual who wrote it. Many individuals who read it will choose to take the words as poetic in value, mere metaphors and similes. Yet, the dark nature of many of these words really leave the reader to wonder...did God/the Lord really inspire these terrible words of dread and depression and sorrow and deep absence? 

1. Ecclesiastes 1:7

     7 All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full.

Questions
     1. Let us take this verse for the poetic value since, obviously, the sea does not have a brim to which it may be filled. Now, if you consider the symbol of water as having to do with emotion does this verse mean that there are many emotions, just none that are fulfilling?

     2. There are many emotions that make up everything that it is to be a human being. If there are no adequate emotions to be fulfilling does that mean that being a human is an empty experience?

     3. If many emotions fill a sea of emptiness didn't God/the Lord know that this would happen to humans? Why didn't He change this to make the human experience more meaningful?

     4. How can an all-powerful creator create something that can never be fulfilled?

2. Ecclesiastes 1:9

     9 What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

Questions
     1. Okay, if there is nothing new under the sun then why are the followers of the Bible constantly looking for new signs and things they have never seen before but have supposedly been told will happen sooner or later?

     2. If what has been done will be done again wouldn't that mean that God/the Lord will NOT behave in a manner He has not already behaved in before?

     3. If God/the Lord has a track record for losing His temper, revoking promises, murdering people en mass, and pretty much fucking things up for everyone and everything on the entire planet won't He simply do it again since there is nothing new under the sun and what has been done before will be done again?

     4. If there is nothing new under the sun then when a baby is born into the world they have actually been here before, right?

     5. If there is nothing new under the sun then when people say there is more evil now in the world than ever before they are wrong, right? I mean, wouldn't there be just as much evil present now as there has ever been?

3. Ecclesiastes 1:14

     14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Questions
     1. Is this verse only referencing what people do and not what God/the Lord does?

     2. Why is it that whatever man does is stupid and pathetic and meaningless? Is it because he does it all for himself?

     3. If man is doomed because whatever he does he does for himself, wouldn't the Lord/God also be doomed since everything He does and everything He MAKES man do is for Himself, for the glory of God/the Lord?

     4. If everything that God/the Lord does or causes is for His own glory how in the fuck is He any different than when man does something for himself? Is it because God is God and man is man?

     5. If everything man does is meaningless does this mean God/the Lord created a meaningless creation?

     6. If everything man does is meaningless then how can he show glory to God/the Lord? Wouldn't glory construe something with meaning?

4. Ecclesiastes 1:15 

     15 What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted.

Questions
     1. If this is the case then why does God/the Lord count on man to show God glory?

     2. If man is crooked and cannot be straightened then why does God even try?

     3. If what is lacking cannot be counted shouldn't you look to the Creator for the true beginning of all the trouble/problems? How does such a great Creator put out so many things that are lacking and crooked?

     4. If what is crooked cannot be straightened does that mean there is no hope?

5. Ecclesiastes 1:17-18

     17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

     18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.

Questions
     1. What the hell happened to all of the great things that Solomon said about wisdom in the Book of Proverbs?

     2. God sure did make sure that man had no way out, right? I mean, with folly there is sorrow and with wisdom there is sorrow? WTF? There is nothing man can do, right? Wouldn't this be a divine catch-22?

6. Ecclesiastes 2:16

     16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered; the days have already come when both have been forgotten. Like the fool, the wise too must die!

Questions
     1. Sooo, then the promises of the wise living a long life really amount to a pile of beans, correct?


7. Ecclesiastes 2:26
     26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Questions
     1. But it does not freaking matter whether or not God gives wisdom and knowledge and all of that happy crappy if such things still equal empty sorrow in the end, right?

     2. What good is a gift if it is no good to the one who receives it?


8. Ecclesiastes 3:1, 3, 8
     1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

     3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,

     8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

Questions
     1. Is this why bad things happen to good people?

     2. Is this why good things happen to bad people?

     3. Is this God's excuse for all of the bad shit He does/lets happen?


9. Ecclesiastes 3:10, 14
     10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.

     14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him. 

Questions
     1. Ahhh, so God/the Lord IS the One Who fucked it up for everyone, right? God is the Placer of the enmity in man, correct?

     2. Is enmity the burden of man?

     3. If everything that God does endures forever wouldn't this mean that God placing the enmity within man will last forever?

     4. If nothing can be added or taken does this also mean that God cannot add or take away?


10. Ecclesiastes 3:15
     15 Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before; and God will call the past to account.

Questions
     1. Do you think that when God calls up the past He will remember all of the bad shit HE has done to man?

     2. Will God remember how He purposely hardened Pharaoh's heart?

     3. Will God remember that He instructed His people to kill the inhabitants of entire cities?

     4. Will God remember that He brought His people to the brink of starvation and then punished them terribly when they asked for food and water?


11. Ecclesiastes 3:16
     16 And I saw something else under the sun: In the place of judgment—wickedness was there, in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

Questions
     1. Wouldn't this then mean that God/the Lord is wicked?

     2. If nothing is new under the sun then the Lord has judged wickedly and with regularity, correct?

     3. Think about the story of the Flood. Is not God's brand of justice WICKED?
     
     4. Think about the commandment to stone bratty children to death. Is not God's judgment WICKED?

     5. Think about God shirking the attributes of Love. Is not God WICKED?


12. Ecclesiastes 3:17
     17 I said to myself, “God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.”

Questions
     1. But if God's judgement is tainted and wicked then the good folk are just as fucked as the bad folk, correct?

     2. If someone was judged during their life for something bad that they did are they going to be judged AGAIN for that same thing when God supposedly judges every being at the end of all time? Has God ever heard of double jeopardy? This would be a very good example of God's wicked justice, wouldn't it?


13. Ecclesiastes 3:18-20
     18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals.

     19 Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath ; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless.

     20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.

Questions
     1. What horrible and depressing verses these are, right? Everything meaningless? This is supposed to be text that is God inspired?

     2. If everything is meaningless then wouldn't the Creator of everything ALSO be meaningless?


14. Ecclesiastes 3:22
     22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

Questions
     1. Doesn't this totally sound like something from the movie The Matrix?


15. Ecclesiastes 4:1
     1 Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors— and they have no comforter.

Questions
     1. And WHO is the Oppressor? WHO allows all of this oppression to happen, right? This oppression cannot simply just happen because of man since man has no power to do anything of meaningful value on his own. God does it all, correct? So, again I ask you WHO is responsible for the oppression?

     2. If the Truth has the ability to set one free then realizing the Truth that it is God Who is the Oppressor should set the oppressed free, correct?


16. Ecclesiastes 4:2-3
     2 And I declared that the dead, who had already died, are happier than the living, who are still alive.

     3 But better than both is the one who has never been born, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.

Questions
     1. These verses are seriously fucked up, right? The dead happier than the living? WTF kind of horseshit is that?

     2. Hey, if those who are never born are better off, why give people who get abortions so much trouble?


17. Ecclesiastes 4:7
     7 Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

Questions
     1. If everything under the sun cannot exits without the express permission of God then God is responsible for anything and everything that is meaningless, correct?


18. Ecclesiastes 4:10-12
     10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

     11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?

     12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Questions
     1. Oh, these verses sound all nice and cherry until you realize that it is God who constantly pits people against each other, right?

     2. A cord of three is not easily broken unless God is right there in the middle, correct?


19. Ecclesiastes 5:12
     12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.

Questions
     1. The sleep of a laborer is sweet even when they have had little to eat? Are you insane? Have you ever gone to bed hungry? Did you sleep well with your hungry belly burbling away? Did your hunger allow you to sleep sweetly?

     2. Why wouldn't the rich sleep well? Isn't that what insurance is for?


20. Ecclesiastes 5:20
     20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.

Questions
     1. How nice. Sooo, does this verse mean that human beings as a whole really serve no purpose whatsoever (other than the dastardly plans God has for them) and so the Great Divine keeps them occupied with happy little hearts?

     2. If they are being kept occupied isn't that akin to being sidetracked or tricked?

Job Part IV: Just a Few Questions

This is the second to last posting for the questions for the Book of Job in the Holy Bible. I hope you have been considering the answers to the questions as you have been reading them. I also hope that you will take the time to type in some of your answers in the comments section at the end of each posting.

1. Job 9:17

17 For he breaks me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

Questions

1. Shouldn't this verse tell you there is something very wrong with this God?

2. Job 10:8

8 "'Your hands have framed me and fashioned me altogether, yet you destroy me.

Questions

1. This says a lot about God, doesn't it? A God Who creates with the specific intent to destroy? Now...why would an all-powerful being do that? To play games with the helpless? To bring Himself glory through the forced worship of those He creates? For WHAT?

3. Job 11:6-8

6 that he would show you the secrets of wisdom! For true wisdom has two sides. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

7 "Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty?

8 They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know?

Questions

1. Isn't that just like religion to imply that there really isn't anything man can really know, seek, or do?

4. Job 11:11

11 For he knows false men. He sees iniquity also, even though he doesn't consider it.

Questions

1. If God does indeed know falsehood and see iniquity without considering it then the first and last thing He must see in regard to such IS Himself, right?

5. Job 11:13

13 "If you set your heart aright, stretch out your hands toward him.

Questions

1. How can you set your heart right when God has taken it from your chest? How can you stretch out your hands when God has cut off your arms?

6. Job 12:23-25

23 He increases the nations, and he destroys them. He enlarges the nations, and he leads them captive.

24 He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

25 They grope in the dark without light. He makes them stagger like a drunken man.

Questions

1. Aren't these verses the bitter truth about this God of the Bible? Why is this God of Love concerned with destroying, leading astray, and causing to become lost without hope and help?

7. Job 14:1

1 "Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

1. Is this also a clue as to why God never speaks of His mother, why He harbors such great disdain for women?

Turkey Broth for the Spirit: Just a Few Questions Part I: The Pentateuch

FINALLY here!

     I have finally put together all of Part I of my book series that questions the verses of the Bible. This first book covers solely the first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch, and is the total compilation of the posts in the corresponding blog. You will notice that in the book many of the verses read differently than they do in the posts since it was absolutely necessary for me to ONLY use the World English Bible translation.

     With ALL of the questions posed in regards to the Pentateuch in one compilation there is no need whatsoever to flip-flop between various posts. However, I would still like for people to post their answers to the questions and hopefully you will do just that.

Ezra: Just a Few Questions

Short List

There was really not a whole bunch that the book of Ezra had to offer as far as my questioning the books of the Bible goes, thus this is a very short post. Enjoy!

1. Ezra 1:1-3

1 In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, the LORD fulfilled the prophecy he had given through Jeremiah. He stirred the heart of Cyrus to put this proclamation in writing and to send it throughout his kingdom:

2 "This is what King Cyrus of Persia says: "The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. He has appointed me to build him a Temple at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

3 Any of you who are his people may go to Jerusalem in Judah to rebuild this Temple of the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives in Jerusalem. And may your God be with you!

Questions
     1) Oh look! The LORD stirred the heart of Cyrus of Persia. Would Cyrus would have done what he did if the LORD had not put him up to it? Is this yet another example of good old Lordy-Poo manipulating the free will of a human king or ruler yet AGAIN?

     2) Manipulation. Hummm. Sooo...this book of the Bible starts off with a lie?

2. Ezra 3:5

5 After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings, the New Moon sacrifices and the sacrifices for all the appointed sacred festivals of the LORD, as well as those brought as freewill offerings to the LORD.

Questions
     1) There are New Moon and harvest festivals and all kinds of sacred holidays in just about every culture that are aimed at thanking a wide variety of divine beings. Sooo...God's/the LORD's people can have all of these types of sacred feasts and holidays but everyone else who worships different gods can't (at least not without incurring the supposed wrath of the God of the Bible)?

     2) Free will offering? Considering how often Senor Yahweh jacks with the free will of human beings don't you think this is a laugh at best?

3. Ezra 3:12-13

12 But many of the older priests, Levites, and other leaders who had seen the first Temple wept aloud when they saw the new Temple's foundation. The others, however, were shouting for joy.

13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people’s weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.

Questions
     1) This is not a good thing in this case. I thinking the crying SNAFU could be indicative of severe mental/psychological trauma, right? I mean, is the LORD going to tell the people building this temple just what He told the people who built the last temple? You  know...when He makes them think it will last forever?

4. Ezra 6:21

21 The Passover meal was eaten by the people of Israel who had returned from exile and by the others in the land who had turned from their immoral customs to worship the LORD, the God of Israel.

Questions
     1) What is the truth here? Isn't the truth that the people will always be in exile and captivity so long as they are God's people? What has human history shown about this?

5. Ezra 7:6

6 This Ezra was a scribe who was well versed in the Law of Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given to the people of Israel. He came up to Jerusalem from Babylon, and the king gave him everything he asked for, because the gracious hand of the LORD his God was on him.

Questions
     1) Skilled in the Law of Moses? You mean the Ten Commandments? How fucking skilled do you have to be for ten goddamn commandments?

6. Ezra 7:17

17 With this money, then, you shall with all diligence buy bulls, rams, and lambs, with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and you shall offer them on the altar of the house of your God that is in Jerusalem.

Questions
     1) Yeah, since money has no blood of its own to be taken in sacrifice they have to use the money to buy some blood, right?

7. Ezra 10:1

1 While Ezra prayed and made this confession, weeping and lying face down on the ground in front of the Temple of God, a very large crowd of people from Israel--men, women, and children--gathered and wept bitterly with him.

Questions
     1) Throwing themselves down and crying bitterly? They got the kids to do this as well? WTF?

8. Ezra 10:10-12
10 Then Ezra the priest stood and said to them: "You have committed a terrible sin. By marrying pagan women, you have increased Israel's guilt.

11 So now confess your sin to the LORD, the God of your ancestors, and do what he demands. Separate yourselves from the people of the land and from these pagan women."

12 Then the whole assembly raised their voices and answered, "Yes, you are right; we must do as you say!"

Questions
     1) Right out of The Children of the Corn, right? Yessssss, MAS-tah! we shall toss our women aside like kindling because they are...pagans? You have increased Israel's guilt sooo...leave your women? How fucking stupid and heartless and irresponsible is this?

I Samuel Part VI: Just a Few Questions

The Original Soap Opera

The plight of the people of Israel can be summed up in two words: sopa opera. Everything that happens to the people of Israel as well as to their enemies is truly captivating in many respects, totally 'shrimping' anything that has ever happened to Victor Newman, Nikki Newman, Victoria, Jack, Mrs. Chandler, Nick, or anyone else on my favorite daytime soap. Actually, take ALL of the television soaps and put them together and you still have nothing close to the drama of the people of Israel in the Old Testament.

However, do not be so ignorant as to accept these captivating stories of the Old Testament as truth simply because they are captivating, right? I mean, sure, the daytime soaps are interesting but how many times can people return from the dead, get amnesia, marry each other, and all of that happy horseshit? You don't really believe it because you know it is a STORY, not true, only meant for entertainment purposes, right? The same can be said of the Old Testament and the lamentable people of Israel. They just seem to have some of the worst luck ever, don't they? Then they have the tantrums that their savant deity seems absurdly prone to. Lovely.

In reading through the Old Testament books I found that there was question after question after question that popped out as I continued to read such a captivating soap opera. While it was immensely interesting on many levels I had to wonder why people actually thought this stuff was true. Sooo...here are more of my questions as we continue going through the book of I Samuel. If you feel you have an answer to any of these questions please be so kind as to post your response at the end of the particular post. If you are utilizing a Bible verse as a reference please be sure to note the passage location so that I may look it up.

And now...let us continue with Part VI for the book of I Samuel.

1. I Samuel 17:47

47 And everyone assembled here will know that the LORD rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the LORD's battle, and he will give you to us!"

Questions

     1) The LORD's battle? Do you mean the LORD's battle in the sense that the LORD is usually the one Who starts all of this shit to begin with?

     2) The LORD will give you to us? How does this work out considering that the LORD NEVER gives without taking something greater?

2. I Samuel 17:49

49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

Questions

     1) Uhmmm...so the stone that David slung sank into Goliath's forehead? How did this happen when I Samuel 17:5 clearly notes that Goliath had a helmet of bronze?

     2) Did Goliath's helmet NOT cover his forehead?

     3) Did Goliath NOT wear his helmet upon going out to meet David?

     4) The Bible notes that Goliath was a man of war from the time of his youth, so WHY would a man of war go out to battle without his helmet unless he was a total moron?

3. I Samuel 17:50

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.

Questions

     1) Why does the Bible have so many stories where either God or the people who were adopted by God (the Israelites) win in lopsided victories?

     2) Are the lopsided victories supposed to convince people of the truth of the Bible and the supposed mighty strength of God?

4. I Samuel 17:51

51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

Questions

     1) Okay, sooo...do you remember that I Samuel 17:7 notes that Goliath's spearhead weighed six hundred shekles, which is fifteen pounds? If Goliath's spearhead weighed this much, how much do you think his sword weighed?

     2) Do you remember in I Samuel 17:39 Saul gave his armor to David and David couldn't use it because he was not used to the weight of it, couldn't fight in it? If David could not use the armor and sword of Saul...how in the fuckey-doo was David able to lift the sword of Goliath (who shrimped Saul) and cut off Goliath's head?

5. I Samuel 17:53

53 And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.

Questions

     1) Ahhh, so when the people of Israel came back and plundered the camps of the Philistines can't such be considered thievery? Is it legalized thievery since they were fighting for God and the Philistines were the enemy?

     2) Sooo, if God says that something that is normally wrong ISN'T wrong then it is okay to do it and not suffer consequences? Hummm...sounds suspiciously like something Richard Nixon would claim, doesn't it?


6. I Samuel 17:54
54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

Questions
     1) You know, I hear so many of the end timers really focusing on stories where the Christians are supposed to be beheaded for their beliefs, seemingly dipping these fantastical stories into the totally false idea that believers in the supposed mega mighty God of the Bible would NEVER do such a thing to people. REALLY?

     2) Considering the weight of Goliath's spearhead alone, how long do you think it took for the youthful David to drag Goliath's armor back to his own tent? And, where did David's tent come from? Nothing is ever said about David going there to set his own tent. Didn't he go there to where the army was to take his brothers some bread and cheese and to get word from them that he could take back to his father? What is this 'David's tent' bull?


7. I Samuel 18:10-12
10 The very next day a tormenting spirit from God overwhelmed Saul, and he began to rave in his house like a madman. David was playing the harp, as he did each day. But Saul had a spear in his hand,

11 and he suddenly hurled it at David, intending to pin him to the wall. But David escaped him twice.

12 Saul was then afraid of David, for the LORD was with David and had turned away from Saul.

Questions
     1) Houston, WE have a serious problem here, don't we? Read I Samuel 16:14-23, and then read the above verses again. Do you see the problem? In this story David is already with Saul by the time the evil spirit comes to torment Saul. BUT in chapter 16 the spirit torments Saul and then in the process of trying to relieve Saul of his psychological issues David was sent for so that he would play his harp for the king, right?

     2) Why does it say in the verses above that Saul, while raving with his torment, threw a spear at David intending to pin David to the wall...TWICE? The chapter 16 story in verse 23 says that whenever the tormenting spirit from God came to Saul, David would play his instrument and then relief would come to Saul, the evil spirit finally leaving him alone, right? What the hell is going on? Is whoever is writing this NOT paying attention to what he has already written, or what?


8. I Samuel 18:25, 27
25 Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

27 David and his men went out and killed 200 Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as full payment to the king to become his son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David as his wife.

Questions
     1) This is just all fucked up in so many ways, right? Never mind that the king said the bride price would be 100 foreskins of the Philistines, but David goes and butchers the penises of twice the necessary number?


9. I Samuel 19:9-10
9 Then a harmful spirit from the LORD came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre.

10 And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.

Questions
     1) Houston, we have ANOTHER problem. But what else is new? Why are we seeing this freaking tormenting spirit/Saul throws a spear story AGAIN?


10. I Samuel 19:11-12
11 Then Saul sent troops to watch David's house. They were told to kill David when he came out the next morning. But Michal, David's wife, warned him, "If you don't escape tonight, you will be dead by morning."

12 So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped.

Questions
     1) Sooo...the crack troops belonging to the king watch everything BUT the windows?


11. I Samuel 25:18
18 Abigail wasted no time. She quickly gathered 200 loaves of bread, two wineskins full of wine, five sheep that had been slaughtered, nearly a bushel of roasted grain, 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 fig cakes. She packed them on donkeys

Questions
     1) I want to know HOW this woman Abigail quickly gathered all of the stuff mentioned in this verse, right? Did she do all of this stuff by herself?
