Ecclesiastes Part II

     Here we have the second posting for the Book of Ecclesiastes. This book of the Bible just gets screwier and screwier with some of the little stories and snippets of supposed wisdom that it contains. Many of the verses are in direct contradiction with other verses, almost to a point of aggravation. This is a truly ridiculous book of the Bible. How can people read this muck and harbor even an inkling of wanting to believe in this God that has inspired such filth?

1. Ecclesiastes 6:1-2

     1 I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind:

     2 God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.

Questions
     1. Why does God/the Lord give in little incomplete snippets and parcels that always turn out to be dark little gifts more along the lines of a behemoth Pandora's Box?

     2. How is a perfect God/Lord so persistently incomplete in His gift giving? Why is there always something left out?

     3. Is there something left out of God/the Lord? Is this why He is so erratic and absurd in His supposed gift giving? Is what is left out of God/the Lord glory? Is this lack of glory why He demands it from man?

     4. If God/the Lord created everything under the sun didn't He also create evil?

2. Ecclesiastes 6:3 

     3 A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.

Questions
     1. What do children and many long years living and prosperity matter if everything is meaningless? Didn't this book mention in from the very start that everything is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 2:17-23)?

     2. Would the mother or father of the stillborn child agree with the last part of this verse?

3. Ecclesiastes 6:7

     7 Everyone’s toil is for their mouth, yet their appetite is never satisfied.

Questions
     1. But it is all meaningless, right? Sooo, it really does not matter whether it is toil or hunger it all means a big pile of bullshit, correct?

     2. Was Jesus' toil for His mouth?

     3. Is God's/the Lord's toil for His mouth? If so, if His appetite never satisfied?

4. Ecclesiastes 6:9

     9 Better what the eye sees than the roving of the appetite. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Questions
     1. What happens if what the eyes see is not good? Would it not make sense for the eyes to rove to find something better?

     2. Is it meaningless to search for something better?

     3. Chasing the wind is NOT meaningless is it? Didn't God/the Lord know that you CAN catch the wind and convert its mighty power to energy?

5. Ecclesiastes 6:10

     10 Whatever exists has already been named, and what humanity is has been known; no one can contend with someone who is stronger.

Questions
     1. No one can contend with someone who is stronger? Really? How do you explain David and Goliath?

6. Ecclesiastes 7:1-2

     1 A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth.

     2 It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.

Questions
     1. Ah, now a good name is said to be better than fine perfume. Doesn't Proverbs 22:1 say that a good name is better than riches? Why the change? Is this simply just another thing a good name is better than? Again, what does it freaking matter if everything is supposed to be meaningless? Is the Vanderbilt name better than Carolina Herrera perfume?

     2. The day of death better than the day of birth? For whom? For God/the Lord? What does He do with the dead? Eat them? Are people more useful to the Lord/God if they are dead? If people are more useful when they are dead then why give them life to begin with?

     3. Death is the destiny of everyone? What about Enoch and the prophet who was whisked away in a chariot of fire? How often does God fudge the rules?

     4. Why should the living take death to heart if everything is meaningless? Is death the only meaningful thing? Wouldn't that make God the God of death and not the God of life?

7. Ecclesiastes 7:3

     3 Frustration is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart. 

Questions
     1. In Proverbs 17:22 it says that a merry heart is just like medicine but a broken spirit dries up the bones...sooo, what the fuck? Make up your freaking mind here, God. 

     2. If a merry heart is just like medicine and if frustration is better than laughter, wouldn't frustration also be counted as a medicine?

     3. If God considers frustration to be good medicine where in the hell did He get His medical knowledge or degree? A Cracker Jacked box?

8. Ecclesiastes 7:5

     5 It is better to heed the rebuke of a wise person than to listen to the song of fools.

Questions
     1. This is pure common sense, isn't it? There is nothing new being revealed here in some divine fashion, is there?

     2. I just don't know about this verse, right? Does this apply only to those being rebuked or to everyone in general to include those NOT being rebuked? I mean, if you consider a judge's decision to be rebuke of the wise does this verse infer that it would be better to listen to such than fun music?

     3. Sooo, if this applies to those who are not being rebuked would you rather read a court decision on a lengthy and boring contracts case OR listen to Gwen Stefani sing that her shit is bananas?

9. Ecclesiastes 7:12

     12 Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it.

Questions
     1. Sooo, wisdom preserves those who have it? But...doesn't Ecclesiastes 1:18 say that with much wisdom comes much sorrow?

     2. If much sorrow comes with wisdom and if wisdom is a shelter is all of that sorrow providing the shelter in full or part?

10. Ecclesiastes 7:13-15

     13 Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked?

     14 When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future.

     15 In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: the righteous perishing in their righteousness, and the wicked living long in their wickedness. 

Questions
     1. Sooo, if God has made the good and the bad and the happy and the sad...He has ALSO made the meaningless, hasn't He?

     2. How can a perfect God make something meaningless?

     3. How can a righteous God make something meaningless ON PURPOSE (and everything God does and creates IS supposed to be for a reason and thus on purpose, right?)?

11. Ecclesiastes 7:17

     17 Do not be overwicked, and do not be a fool— why die before your time?

Questions
     1. So, if you are not supposed to be OVERwicked, is it okay to be a little wicked?

     2. Why not just say do not be wicked at all? Why use the term OVERwicked?

     3. Sooo, if being really wicked as well as a fool makes you kick the bucket before your time, what the freak happened to this implied rule when it comes to Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin? Why didn't they die when they were kids or young men before they fucked up a good portion of the world for a really long time?

12. Ecclesiastes 7:19

     19 Wisdom makes one wise person more powerful than ten rulers in a city.

Questions
     1. Hah! God/the Lord must have never heard of politics, right? I mean, some of the biggest idiots EVER end up in charge and with more power than should ever be given or allowed to anyone, correct?

13. Ecclesiastes 8:4-5

     4 Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?”

     5 Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.

Questions
     1. Isn't the Lord/God supposed to be King, THE King? Lots of people obey His supposed commands and come to all sorts of harm (some of them even cause a lot of harm; some even harm themselves in the name of God their King), so what the freak happened to obeying the king and coming to no harm, hummm?

     2. A king's word may be supreme, sure, BUT when the king is issuing statements and words that are detrimental to his people shouldn't you absolutely question the king as to what the FUCK he is doing?

14. Ecclesiastes 8:7-8

     7 Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come?

     8 As no one has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death. As no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

Questions
     1. But we CAN know the future, right? If there is nothing new under the sun (as so stated in Ecclesiastes 1:9) then there is nothing new when it comes to the future, correct?

     2. The future is not cloaked in utter darkness, is it? By reviewing past events and results and outcomes and merging those with current events and proposed actions, isn't it true that we can develop a fairly accurate idea of what the future will be?

     3. Does not knowing everything about the future mean that we do not know the future?

15. Ecclesiastes 8:14

     14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

Questions
     1. Ecclesiastes 7:14 says that God has made the good times as well as the bad times. Lovely. Considering that, wouldn't it be fair and accurate to say that in this verse when the wicked get what the righteous deserve and when the righteous get what the wicked deserve THIS IS OF GOD'S DOING?

     2. All of this is supposed to be meaningless to boot. Why is God going about making all of this dastardly, meaningless shit? Why does God make bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people?

16. Ecclesiastes 9:2

     2 All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, so with the sinful; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.

Questions
     1. If this is the case then why do so many of the followers of God draw so many goddamn lines of separation?

     2. If this verse is the truth then why does God/the Lord create so much separation and division within man? If everything is so much the same why is God constantly trying to make things so very different in really fucked up ways?

17. Ecclesiastes 9:4

     4 Anyone who is among the living has hope —even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

Questions
     1. Really? Doesn't Ecclesiastes 4:2 say that the dead who have already died are happier than the living? WTF kind of bipolar horseshit is going on here?

18. Ecclesiastes 9:5-6

     5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten.

     6 Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun.

Questions
     1. This is freaking lunacy, right? Doesn't Ecclesiastes 4:3 say that better is he who has never been born and who has never seen the evil under the sun? If that is the case WTF difference does it make whether or not the living know they will die?

19. Ecclesiastes 9:11-12

     11 I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

     12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.

Questions
     1. This is so fucking stupid! Time and chance have NOTHING to do with ANYTHING, do they?! Read the goddamn Bible. Why do the Children of Israel win or lose? Why does anyone die? Why did the freaking Flood happen? Why is there pestilence and slavery and famine? Do you really think these things are from CHANCE and TIME? Fuck no! Isn't God/the Lord the One who manipulates everything to meet whatever ridiculous and absurd ends He has created?

     2. So, people are like fish in a net, an evil net? And WHO does this net belong to? WHO cast the net after purposely creating helpless little fish (the people) in a stinking toxic sea of hate and sorrow and suffering? WHO creates the unexpected evil?

20. Ecclesiastes 9:14-16

     14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it.

     15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.

     16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.

Questions
     1. How freaking stupid is this story? So this wise but poor man saves everyone BUT no one remembers WTF he did to save everyone? No one remembers a word? If this guy who saved everyone was so insignificant how in the fuckey-doo do the people even remember he saved them to begin with, hummm?

This Grace, This Faith, This Fall

It ALL Must Start with the Fall

Today I watched a rather good movie called "Encounters: Paradise" with my mother. The movie was about how these various characters are having troubles in their lives, troubles ranging from criminal acts to drug abuse to emotional disconnection from their present life, and how Jesus comes into their life literally at a pivotal, watershed moment that WILL reflect in every moment of the rest of their lives. 

It was actually a very good movie and I am glad I watched it because it really brought a clearer understanding to me personally of the problems I perceive in the belief that Jesus died on the cross for all the sins of all men, that there does indeed exist a heaven and a hell, that the sorrow and death and bad things in this world are because of the fall of man, and that no matter how good of a person you were in life (or how bad, perhaps) if you do not believe in Jesus and have Him in your heart when you die you WILL go to a very terrible place.

I was raised Christian. Actually, I was raised very, very strict Christian. Many of my other blogs discuss the things I was taught to believe, and incidentally the things I believed for many years, but here I wish to discuss some of the romanticized notions of salvation through Jesus and the fall of man and why bad things happen...and how they were presented in this movie.

I will very readily admit that there is a very strong appeal to the thought that for all of the things I worry about, all of the things I fear, hope, need, want, love, see, feel, hurt, all of these emotions...for all of these things I experience it sure does sound nice that for all of my failings and imperfections not only can I have immediate help all of the time, every time, but I can also be completely and totally forgiven for everything I have done that is wrong. 

All I have to do is believe. All I have to do is take the free gift.

It is not a free gift. It is a very heavy gift that is wrapped so beautifully that when you first pick it up you see the beautiful wrapping paper and you feel the weight of the gift and you KNOW for certain that you picked the right gift. But then...you unwrap what you were given and what do you see? A list of ideologies, beliefs, myths, stories, fables and the like that you must hold as true in order to partake of the life of the matter.

Have you ever taken the time to look closely at what it is exactly that you are supposed to believe?

The thing that got to me the most in this movie "Encounters: Paradise" is the problem that the character Chris has with Jesus. What is Chris' problem? His 22-year old son died in the Thailand tsunami. Chris is so destroyed and distraught he is disconnected from himself, his wife, and reality. He lives in his pain as though it were the very last thing he has left that will allow his heart to hold onto the memory of his son.

The high scene between Chris and Jesus is when Chris demands to know why his son died? Why did Jesus/God kill this young man of only 22, who was actually studying to become a doctor of divinity in order to help bring people to Jesus? Jesus responds by telling Chris that He created a perfect world without death and disease and all the terrible things that happen be they caused by humans or caused by nature. Then when man ate of the wrong fruit all of that was changed forever and now man is left with the very unhappy parting gift for their disobedience to God: Sin.

Sin is why man is fallen. Sin is man's disobedience to God. Sin is what Jesus died for. Sin is cured, if you will, by the acceptance of Jesus into your heart and your life. This 'fall' that man initiated when he disobeyed God and ate of the wrong tree is the hands-down, number one reason (if not the ONLY reason) why bad things happen...like the character Chris' son dying in the tsunami.

Interestingly enough the problems I see with this are not to be found after the 'fall' but before it ever happened and when Adam and Eve were still in the Garden of Eden.

Created in Perfection

So, Genesis 1:26-28, 31 says,

      26 And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of heaven and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.

     27 And God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

     28 And God blessed them; and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of heaven and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.

     31 And God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

The very first verse of Genesis chapter two specifically notes that the heavens and the earth and all their host were finished. And what is finishing something but completing something? And if something is complete does that not intone perfection? Yes, it does. If something is truly complete it exists in a perfected state since any elements absent would by definition render such incomplete.

You know, this is where things just make zero sense to me. None. And from what I have been taught, what I have learned about God is that He is the ABSOLUTE when it comes to perfection, and it is perfection in ALL things at that. If something is perfect it is complete in every element, free from any fault or any defect. From what I read in the Genesis account in the first two chapters it cannot be denied that God did not create a perfect man.

Free Will and the 'Fall' of Man

In this movie when Jesus explains free will as a particular gift from God (and I am totally paraphrasing here) He notes that before bad things happen and before good things happen there is an element that consistently pops up every time without fail: A person or persons make or made a CHOICE or set of CHOICES to do whatever it was they did. No arm twisting, just choice. From that choice a set of consequences will occur and will range anywhere between the very good and the very bad, the joyful and the sorrowful, the loving and the hateful, the diminishing and the increasing, the appreciating and the ungrateful. The utter failures and the sweeping victories. 

In the Garden of Eden God told Adam and Eve specifically to NOT eat from the tree of knowledge of Good and evil, even going so far as to inform the newly created man that if he DID happen to eat the bad fruit he would die. Here is where much of the foundation of Christianity may be found: God created free will and put it in man, God told man what NOT to do, man did exactly what he was instructed NOT to do, man was warned by God and did not listen. Thus, man gets exactly what they bartered for which, of course, is suffering and death and sorrow.

     

I couldn't disagree more.

Yes, I have heard all of the arguments (both sides) of whether or not God knew man would do what he did, so why didn't God stop him? Then there is the argument that refusal to believe such a story is actual rebellion against God, a remnant of the fallen nature of man that is the eternal gift that keeps giving its unwanted assistance in all things both human and divine lest salvation be sought through Jesus Christ. The surprise here really isn't in the notion that all the sins of man started with eating that bad fruit. It is not the fall itself. It is not the disobedience of man toward God.

It is considering the condition of the mind of man before the fruit was consumed.

Free will is the freedom to make choices that are not controlled, that are completely voluntary. God does not interfere with a human's free will. Here, though, this free will 'choice' that man made, that led to the fall of man and expulsion from the Garden of Eden, is non-existent.

Adam and Eve were never told by God the FULL definition of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. What does God say to them? All God says is that you can eat of every tree EXCEPT this tree, and if you do you will die. And what about the serpent who preyed on Eve's innocent ignorance? Did God ever note to Adam and Eve the presence of the serpent and what the serpent's intentions were when it came to God and man? Did God ever tell them that the serpent lies? Even more than that, did Adam and Eve even KNOW what constituted a lie?

Would you agree that a lie is evil? Surely, right? If the truth be the good, then the lie be the evil. But how can Adam and Eve even know that lying is wrong or even that the serpent is lying and definitely in the wrong if they do not know what right and wrong are? Remember, they have not eaten of the bad fruit as of yet, so HOW can they conclude that the fruit is bad, whether or not God gave full instruction, when they do not even have so much as a working knowledge as to what good and evil are?

Adam and Eve would not have known the serpent was lying to them.They had no concepts of right and wrong in relation to choice, let alone ANY similar knowledge. They do not know what consequences are and how unpleasant they can be. God puts in the bad tree, tells man it is bad for him and to not touch it...but then God never tells them about the tree of life?

Other questions that should be considered are:

     1. Genesis 3:6

          Here it says the woman saw the fruit was good for food, delightful. But without the knowledge of good and evil how does she know that doing the opposite of what God instructed was great error?

     2. Adam and Eve did not know anything about good and evil, so how could Eve make the proper assessment of the fruit being good for food WITHOUT the required knowledge?

     3. Genesis 3:3

          Here God informs Adam and Eve that the fruit of the bad tree will kill them if they touch and eat it. They would surely die. But isn't this admonition and threat of punishment not quite true or at the very least dishonest? If Adam and Eve had not yet eaten of the tree of life then clearly they are still mortal. What is God doing when He tells Adam and Eve they will die if they eat the fruit when they are already dying? Yes, I am familiar with the response that God was referring to spiritual death by sin. I don't buy it.

     4.God informs them of the bad tree but does not make a peep about the tree of life? 

     5. He tells them of impending doom and death but never ONCE mentions anything about the fullness in life with love in eternity with Him by eating the good tree? They don't even know it exists.

So here we have man, a new creation, a brand new being who is as innocent as they come and God:

     Does not tell them of the serpent

     Does not tell them of the tree of life or what its purpose is

     Does not explain death which is something they know nothing of

     Does not so much as allow a working knowledge of good and evil or offer examples of such

     Does not inform them of disobedience

Furthermore, AFTER they eat of the bad fruit what happens? Now remember that the bad fruit has immediately turned them into sinners/wrongdoers/the damned, alright? Now I want you to think of their response to God when He was walking in the garden, they are hiding, God asks where they are, and what do they say?

They tell God the truth. They did not lie or make God play twenty questions but simply popped right out with the truth. And other than that time the man exhibits no other unsavory behavior UNTIL the LORD God took it upon Himself to sew the seed of enmity within humanity and THEN man was booted from the garden and his behavior pattern took a real dive.

The bad things that happen in the world have nothing to do with any fall by man, for the truth of the matter is that even after eating the wrong fruit man still took that knowledge of good and evil and used it for GOOD, made a specific decision to use it for good by telling God the truth. 

It must be remembered that free will can only exist without prior causes affecting the choice and without God interfering. But God did interfere because He withheld information. He withheld the truth. He withheld life by NOT telling them of both trees from the get go. He denied them the understanding and because of all of that the choice they made was certainly not an informed choice, but a manipulated choice. 

That purposely manipulated choice, despite the wonderfully colorful ideas and myths and assertions about salvation and sweeping forgiveness and many other things was stripped of its base power the very moment God lied by omission, the very moment God manipulated the situation to guide man to sure and swift failure.

The Things People Believe

What parts of any of these Bible verses or stories make you want to believe and trust and love the God of the Bible?

Belief, when manipulated and distorted, can be one of the most absurd, cruel, delusional, ludicrous, hateful, disrespecting, terrible, and evil forces ever known to man. Of course, belief can also be a very good thing but we will not be discussing that here. The potential/actual goodness of belief is not in question. It is the potential/actual terrible and evil qualities of belief that are in question.

Many individuals who hold the Bible and God and Jesus and Salvation and all of that as actual truth, seemingly squander their stores of belief on a spiritual/religious system that deludes and brainwashes its followers into submission.

As you read and listen to these verses and stories I want you to utilize logic and truly consider whether or not there is any viable reason to believe what the verse/story has to say. In addition, if you happen to be a Christian/believer, I want to challenge you to drop the The-Bible-Is-True-Because-The-Bible-And-God-And-Jesus-Say-It-Is-True routine crapola, and instead be absolutely honest with yourself and answer this simple question: Is this something that I would believe in if my eternal salvation did NOT pivot on whether or not I believe such a thing as absolute, divine, ultimate truth? Seriously. If you knew that God would let you into the pearly gates EVEN IF YOU DID NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING IN THE BIBLE AS ACTUAL AND LITERAL TRUTH would you still believe the verse/story?

In this first video you will see one of the most problematic stories of the Bible: The Flood. The Flood. The Flood is a harrowing tale of man's ever-present disobedience to God, God  losing His cool and ending up regretting His creation of man, and God's Nazi Germany solution of killing every body but a select few.

I am racking my brain for an answer as to why believers/Christians would believe that God's commandment to kill all those who work on the Sabbath is okay or ever was okay. Which part of that commandment makes you want to believe anything the Bible has to say? If believing such a ludicrous rule were NOT necessary in order to be considered a child of God would you still believe it?

Why does God disguise Himself as a burning bush? What is the reason for this? Is it because Moses would otherwise not believe it was God speaking to him? Why a burning bush? God is supposed the be the ultimate in creativity and picks a burning bush? God being all powerful (the Bible says this time after time) there is never a reason to disguise Himself. Why do folks believe this absurd story?
